Yay! I'm glad you are at a point that devoting so much time and energy to writing is possible! I'm sorry that it's been such a bad year.

Hi Kari,

I'm actually considering coming out for a visit. I'll post the details when I know more.

Thanks for your comment - it's wonderful to hear about the people rebuilding their lives.

You need to come and visit. From my living room with my backdoor and windows open, I can hear some of the most wonderful sounds I've heard in a long while. People are rebuilding their homes in Mountain Shadows. I can hear the construction. And it's glorious.

It's renewed hope.

While the mountains are indeed different than they were before, all the wildfire fuels have been burnt away -- the likelihood of a fire like that in this area again is probably much slimmer than it has been in a while. Fire is a part of nature -- as destructive as it is, it still has it's place. I hate that homes were destroyed and lives were lost. But the mountains don't look as bad as i had feared. And in time, we will get to see the rebirth of the forest. :)

One of the unfortunate outcomes of this process, besides the loss of homes and lives, is that over 3,000 acres were burned as deep as 4" into the soil, effectively sterilizing it. Mother Nature won't recover from that for a very long time.

Fires this severe (this was actually termed a 'superfire') are not part of the natural cycle, developing in part to the fire suppression management currently practiced in forests close to human habitation. Recovery from these type of fires takes much longer than a typical burn, and in the meantime that unprotected topsoil washes down the slopes with every rain. Once that's gone, it takes decades for enough new soil to form to support a healthy plant community.

We can only hope that this forest will recover in our lifetime.

I know the devastation left behind is unthinkable, but the pictures are actually kind of pretty. The last one reminds me of lava flows at nighttime (which also devastate nearby residents).

I know this next statement is of no value to the animals and people affected by the fire, but this is all part of the process for a healthy forest. “As a rule of thumb, timber experts say that any particular chunk of ground in the forest should be touched by intense fire every 50 to 100 years.” -- http://www.sciencebuzz.org/buzz_tags/forest_regrowth

If we are lucky, the forest growth will happen quickly, and the forest will come back more wonderful and beautiful than it was before. I hope the people and animals who were relocated can find a home along with a sense of peace with what has happened.

Well, an advertisement wasn't quite my intention. :) I guess I was so excited about how cool this program is that I didn't write a very balanced opinion in the original post.

I've added links for several other editing packages since the original posting, but still stand firm in my decision to purchase Autocrit. I invite interested writers to do their own research to find the software that best fits their needs. :)
